Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel technique associated with preliminary ejection of an ink jet recorder.SOLUTION: There is provided an ink jet recorder 1 which comprises a recording head 3 having at least one nozzle array in which a plurality of nozzles are arranged along a first direction, and performs multi-pass recording by ejecting ink to a recording medium P while scanning the recording head 3 in a second direction crossing the first direction. The ink jet recorder makes respective passes of the multi-pass recording by recording thinned-out information such that information to be recorded is formed through mutual interpolation by individual recording of the respective passes, and further includes control means of controlling the recording head 3 so that the recording head 3 performs preliminary ejection operation before or after the recording of each pass of the multi-pass recording, the control means determining the amounts of ink ejected from the plurality of nozzles respectively in the preliminary ejection operation according to thinning-out rates of the plurality of nozzles applied to the recording of the respective passes.
