Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for gear inspection capable of inspecting the surface condition of a tooth of a gear of the inspection target with high accuracy without preparing a master gear having a tooth form with higher accuracy than that of the gear of the inspection target.SOLUTION: A gear inspection device includes: a tooth form curve calculation part 36 for calculating a tooth form curve which represents an outer shape of an inspection target tooth; a basic data storage part 38 for storing basic data which represents relation among an irradiation angle, an irradiation distance and a reflectance amount in the sampling position of a basic data acquiring tooth 52 of a basic data acquiring gear 50 having the same degree of surface roughness and surface color as the inspection target gear 10; an approximate value calculation part 40 for calculating the approximate value of an intensity profile based on the tooth form curve and the basic data; and a theoretical value calculating part 89 for calculating the theoretical value of the intensity profile by correcting the approximate value of the intensity profile according to the influence of the adjoining tooth adjacent to the inspection target tooth 12.
