Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an open shield machine which can be manufactured at a low cost.SOLUTION: A machine body of an open shield machine 1 consists of first, second and third divided body blocks which are to be a front part 1d, a middle part 1e and a tail part 1c. A working face shield jack 16 is provided between the front part and the middle part, an articulation jack 19 is provided between the middle part and the tail part, and a shield jack 2 is provided in the tail part 1c. For excavating of the shield machine, after the front part 1d is advanced, the middle part 1e and the tail part 1c are advanced. The front part 1d is propelled by the working face shield jack 16, the inside of a working face protected by the front part 1d is excavated by an excavator such as a backhoe, reduction of the working face shield jack 16 and expansion of the shield jack 2 are simultaneously performed, and the middle part 1e and the tail part 1c are propelled. In the front part 1d, a front part cutting edge is inserted to working face natural ground in a sandy soil layer of a high ground water level when advanced by the working face shield jack 16, and compaction is performed by a front part partition wall 17.
