PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable machine comprising a function for identifying the cause of a functional defect of a smart key system, and a communication apparatus.SOLUTION: When transmitting a request signal relating to a smart key system from a vehicle 2, the data encrypting the present date are included in that signal. Upon receiving the request signal, an electronic key 3 extracts the information on the encrypted present date (that is, a date of reception) and stores the extracted information in a nonvolatile memory that the electronic key 3 comprises. History information on reception dates stored in the key 3 are extracted from a portable machine e.g., later and used for identifying a communication defect (such as a defect in communication from the vehicle 2 to the key 3 or a defect in communication from the key 3 to the vehicle 2).
