PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a container pressing device which can apply a sufficient pressing force equally all around the entire circumference almost without a gap and in a short time period, when internally pressing a peripheral wall-shaped part to be pressed of a container, and a method for pressing the container.SOLUTION: A pressing device 100 has a plurality of pressing elements 105a to 105d which can press a part of the interior of a peripheral wall-shaped part to be pressed of the container, arranged opposite to the peripheral wall. Each of the pressing elements 105a to 105d is movable between a "retractable" position where the pressing element can be retracted toward the central axis inside the peripheral wall and a "projecting" position where the pressing element projects in the radiating direction from the "retractable" position. The pressing elements 105a to 105d adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction, travel over a mutually different distance in a single stroke between the "retractable" position and the "projecting" position, and after all, pressing pieces 110a to 110d press almost the entire circumference inside the part to be pressed.
