Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector that can suppress irradiation of high-output light to a screen SCR and secure safety.SOLUTION: A projector includes: a light source device 1 provided with an excitation light source 10 for emitting excitation light and a phosphor layer 32; an optical modulation device 400B for forming an image by being illuminated by the light source device 1; a fluorescence intensity detection device 50 for detecting the intensity of a part of light emitted from the light source device 1; and a control device 70 that causes the excitation light source 10 to start emitting the excitation light in a state where the optical modulation device 400B is held in a light shielding state and determines whether or not the light shielding state of the optical modulation device 400B is released on the basis of the detection result by the fluorescence intensity detection device 50.
