Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable suppression of partial reduction of rigidity of a top land in the peripheral direction of a piston.SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes an injector 5 for directly injecting fuel into a cylinder. A piston 1 of the internal combustion engine forms four valve recesses on a top surface of the piston 1. A top ring groove for storing a top ring is formed on an outer peripheral surface 20 of the piston 1. A back clearance being a distance up to the outer peripheral surface 20 of the piston 1 from a bottom surface 22a of the top ring groove, is formed the smallest in a position corresponding to an intake side valve recess nearest to an nozzle hole 5a of the injector 5 among the four valve recesses.
