Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a secondary battery that offers excellent battery characteristics.SOLUTION: A secondary battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode containing an active material, and an electrolytic solution. The active material can occlude and discharge lithium ions, and contains Si and O as constituent elements. The atomic ratio (Si/(Si+O)) of Si to Si and O is in the range of 30 atom% to 75 atom% at the surface of the active material.
