Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve performance of a light detection element without increasing the number of repeating units of quantum dots.SOLUTION: An active layer includes a barrier layer made of a semiconductor and a plurality of quantum dots which are distributed in the barrier layer and made of the semiconductor having a band gap narrower than that of the barrier layer. A pair of spacer layers made of the semiconductor having impurity concentration which is larger than that of the active layer is disposed so as to pinch the active layer. Electrodes for flowing a current in the thickness direction are disposed in a lamination structure composed of the active layer and the pair of the spacer layers.
