Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable accurate detection of water level of a fuel storage pool even when its water level is lowered.SOLUTION: A water level monitoring system 10 detects and monitors water level of pool water 3 in a spent fuel storage pool 2 in which a spent fuel 1 is submerged and stored in the pool water 3. It comprises radiation detection means which is installed in a position facing the water surface 3A of the pool water 3 and measures a radiation dose (an area radiation monitor detector 11 and an area radiation monitor 12) and a process computer 13 which is connected to the area radiation monitor 12. The process computer 13 detects the water level of the pool water 3 by calculating it based on a measured value from the area radiation monitor 12, the radiation source intensity and the position of the spent fuel 1 in the pool water 3, and the radiation shield factor of the pool water 3.
