PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance performance so that conveyance of a sheet is not required and information other than paper size can be detected as sheet information to be used for determination when detecting sheet information for use in determination of sheet availability.SOLUTION: From a sheet to be used mounted on a mounting table of a document reader, its length and width as sheet attributes are detected by a scanner and thickness and material (paper type) as sheet attributes are detected by a medium sensor (S102). Determination is made as to whether or not the detection values of the sheet attributes represent values of a prescribed range with which proper operations are obtained, that is, the detection values are in an allowable range (S103 to S106). If all the detection values of the sheet attributes are in the allowable range, that the sheet is usable is indicated to a user through an operation section (S107). If any one of the detection values of the sheet attributes is not in the allowable range, that the sheet is unusable is indicated to the user (S108).
