Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reading water stress conditions of plants from a transpiration rate or transpiration speed of water from green leaves, in which the measuring is performed in a quick and highly sensitive manner.SOLUTION: The method includes the steps of: forcibly condensing water transpired from back sides of green leaves of a plant on a glass plate in a consecutive manner; and reading a change in the amount of condensation with time from a change in the amount of light that transmits the glass plate while totally reflecting in a longitudinal direction, and a change in the amount of light that scatters and goes out from a surface of the glass plate caused by the condensation on the surface. Therefore, a transpiration rate or transpiration speed of water from many pores on back sides of green leaves of the plant is measured.
