Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength selection diffraction element having diffraction efficiency more excellent than the conventional one, and an optical head device using the same.SOLUTION: A wavelength selection diffraction element 10 includes a transparent substrate 11, a recessed and projecting member 12, and a filling member 13 and allows incident light having at least wavelengths λ, λ, and λof 405 nm wavelength range, 660 nm wavelength range, and 785 nm wavelength range to be made incident thereon. In the wavelength selection diffraction element 10, a second optical member B constituting the recessed and projecting member 12 or the filling member 13 is obtained by curing a photopolymerizable composition containing a zirconium oxide particle whose surface is covered with a surface modifier having a polymerizable group and whose average particle diameter is 3 nm or more and 15 nm or less, and a monofunctional compound having an alicyclic structure of one polymerizable group and a carbon number 10 or more and 14 or less.
