Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an open shield construction method, which prevents outflow of a primary backfill material and can avoid increase in the thickness of a secondary backfill material.SOLUTION: An open shield construction method is used to sequentially bury concrete caissons 4 in single file by repeating steps as necessary including: a step to excavate and remove the forward soil at the front face or the upper surface opening of an open shield machine 1; a step to advance the shield machine by utilizing a concrete caisson 4 for the reaction force; and a step to lift down a new concrete caisson 4 from the upper position and set it to a tail part behind shortened shield jacks located in the jack part of the shield machine. In the aforesaid step of setting the concrete caissons 4, where a primary backfill material 6 is packed into a gap between the outer side of the concrete caisson 4 and the tail part after setting the concrete caisson 4, an outflow-prevention part member 15 meant for the primary backfill material 6 is installed at the front end position of the installed concrete caisson 4 in the location for packing the aforesaid primary backfill material 6, and the primary backfill material 6 is prevented from flowing out.
