Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sewing machine and a method for controlling a sewing machine, which can reduce the switching frequency of the rotational direction of a fabric feed motor and can maintain the synchronization between the driving of a main shaft and the driving of a fabric feed mechanism.SOLUTION: The sewing machine includes a main motor for driving a main shaft which vertically moves a sewing needle, and a fabric feed motor for driving a fabric feed mechanism feeding a fabric. A power transmission mechanism provided in the sewing machine converts the rotational movement of an output shaft of the fabric feed motor in one direction and in the opposite direction to one reciprocating swing movement of the fabric feed mechanism in the horizontal direction so as to transmit the power of the fabric feed motor to the fabric feed mechanism. A CPU of the sewing machine detects a main rotational angle which is a rotational angle of an output shaft of the main motor (S11). The CPU detects a fabric feed rotational angle which is a rotational angle of the output shaft of the fabric feed motor (S13 and S19). The CPU uses the main rotational angle and the fabric feed rotational angle to calculate a rotational speed on which the fabric feed motor is instructed (S16 and S22).
