Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device and an input method capable of properly displaying a softkey corresponding to each of characters having different character types even when a display screen of a display unit is used in the landscape orientation.SOLUTION: When a display screen is used in the portrait orientation, a control unit horizontally divides the display screen and equally aligns plural softkeys to display them on the display screen. When the display screen is used in the landscape orientation, the control unit vertically divides the display screen, displays a first character type of characters on one side and a second character type of characters on the other side, and horizontally aligns the plural softkeys to display them on any one of the one side and the other side.
