Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compound which itself shows liquid crystallinity and has a large refractive index anisotropy, a liquid crystalline composition using the same, and furthermore a liquid crystal element having excellent performance.SOLUTION: The diacetylene derivative is represented by formula (A): R1-Sp1-(Ar1)-(Ar3)-(Phe)-C≡C-C≡C-(Phe)-(Ar4)-(Ar2)-Sp2-R2 (wherein R1 and R2 are each hydrogen, a halogen, a cyano group, an isothiocyanate group, an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, an alkynyl group or a reactive group; Sp1 and Sp2 are each a spacer group; Ar1 and Ar2 are each an optionally substituted aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic group; Ar3 and Ar4 are each an optionally substituted heterocyclic group; Phe is an optionally substituted 1,4-phenylene group; and p, q and r are each 0 or 1). |
