Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination optical system capable of controlling an illumination range and illumination intensity per unit area accompanied with the illumination range while keeping high uniformity of illumination.SOLUTION: In an illumination optical system 1 which is an illumination optical system for a fluorescent microscope and includes, in order from a light source 11 side, a light source 11 for emitting illumination light, an optical integrator 21 for forming a plurality of images of the light source 11, a relay lens 24, a variable power lens 43 and an objective lens 30, the relay lens 24 is constituted so that the plurality of the images of the light source 11 formed by the optical integrator 21 are conjugated with a pupil PL of the objective lens 30 in a state where there is no objective lens 43, and the variable power lens 43 is constituted as a lens having a variable magnification or a lens switchable to a lens having a different magnification.
