Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reflective base material capable of having high luminance and surely preventing generation of luminance unevenness without increasing the number of light sources, and a backlight unit using the reflective base material.SOLUTION: The reflective base material 1 is a resin foam such as a thermoplastic polyester foam, and is formed in shapes of a sheet, a film, and a plate. A skin layer 5a is formed on one surface side of the reflective base material 1, and the skin layer 5a may be even slightly formed on the surface. Namely, minute bubbles 3 may be exposed on the surface on a reflecting face side. Further, it is desirable that thickness of the skin layer 5a is 7 μm or less since the layer 5a may absorb light if the thickness of the skin layer 5a is too thick. A skin layer 5b is formed on a side opposite to the reflecting face side of the reflective base material 1. Consequently, the skin layers are formed on both faces of the reflective base material 1, and therefore, a large number of minute bubbles are not exposed to the surfaces on both faces of the reflective base material 1.
