Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical waveguide element capable of suppressing degradation in optical characteristics of signal light that propagates in a main substrate made into a thin plate and improving optical characteristics of the product.SOLUTION: The optical waveguide element comprises: an optical waveguide substrate comprising a substrate having an electro-optic effect and a thickness of 30 μm or less and an optical waveguide formed therein; and a reinforcing substrate joined with an adhesive layer to the optical waveguide substrate. A buffer layer is formed on a face in the reinforcing substrate side of the optical waveguide substrate, in a portion where the optical waveguide is formed, and further a light-absorbing film is formed so as to cover the buffer layer, in the reinforcing substrate side of the optical waveguide substrate.
