Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst for an internal combustion engine, which has a cleaning effect equivalent to that of a conventional three way catalyst and can be obtained at low cost, and to provide an exhaust gas cleaning device for the internal combustion engine using the same.SOLUTION: A porous apatite complex is obtained by alternately immersing an organic fiber cloth in the aqueous solutions of calcium chloride and phosphoric acid being the solution of an apatite precursor to form an apatite layer on the cloth and then thermally treating. Since the complex functions as an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst for the internal combustion engine, the complex can be used for this purpose by arranging in an exhaust manifold or a muffler. Further, since the noble metal such as platinum, palladium or rhodium is not used, the catalyst can be produced at low cost and the service life of the catalyst can be prolonged longer than heretofore.
