Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique which can accurately detect a communication failure according to a situation within a network and prevent a false detection.SOLUTION: A ring type network 8 comprises: a master switch 1 and switching hubs 2,4, and 6. The master switch 1 generates, in an automatic setting mode of standby time, a control frame storing transmission time and transmits it at predetermined intervals. When each control frame transferred through the ring type network 8 is received, the master switch 1 records its reception time and the transmission time stored by the control frame. The master switch 1 calculates standby time based on the transmission time and the reception time recorded and set the standby time.
