Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a design for a salient pole rotor lamination which keeps within the design peak stress level for a lamination, while substantially maintaining the quality of the electromagnetic performance of an electrical machine.SOLUTION: A rotating electrical machine has a rotor composed of a lamination having a plurality of salient poles. The plurality of poles have one or more holes which are positioned so as to reduce the peak stress experienced by the lamination when the rotor is rotating. The holes are chosen according to a disclosed design procedure which gives a reduction in peak stress for a given limit on the output of the electrical machine.
