Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an additive for drilling mud, which can prevent deterioration of flowability to secure excellent stability even when sea water including electrolytes gets mixed in with mud.SOLUTION: The additive for drilling mud comprises an alkyl-modified carboxyl group-containing water-soluble copolymer obtained by polymerizing (meth)acrylic acid, 12-24C alkyl (meth)acrylate and according to need, a compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups. In the additive for drilling mud, the viscosity of 1 wt.% neutralized viscous liquid with respect to pure water, that with respect to sea water containing electrolytes, and TI value are in the prescribed ranges, respectively.
