Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a spiral spring made of a wire material with considerably different qualities with high reliability within strict tolerance in the production of comparatively a long spiral spring.SOLUTION: First of all, a desired nominal geometry of the spiral spring and an NC control program which is suitable for production of the nominal geometry are defined. An actual position of a selected structural element of the spiral spring 200 relative to a preferably machine-fixed reference element is measured at a measurement area 254 in at least one measurement time which occurs after the start and before the end of the production of the spiral spring. The measurement area 254 is located at a finite distance 210 from a forming device 120 in the longitudinal direction of the spiral spring, wherein the distance is less than the overall length of the finished spiral spring. The measured actual position is compared with a nominal position of the structural element for the measurement time, in order to determine difference between the actual position and the nominal position at the measurement time. A pitch tool 130 of the forming device is controlled based on the positional difference.
