PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a damping device capable of exhibiting a damping force not only in a horizontal plane but also in the vertical direction. SOLUTION: This damping device 10 is installed on a base isolation layer formed between an upper structure 14 and a lower structure 15. The damping device includes a first joint part 11 fixed to the lower structure 15, a second joint part 13 fixed to the upper structure 14, and a bar-like extensible joint part 12 for joining the first joint part 11 and the second joint part 13. The first joint part 11 includes a spherical body 17 formed at one end of the joint part 12, a holding body 18 which holds the spherical body 17 while covering and which is fixed to the lower structure 15, and a friction member 19 interposed between the spherical body 17 and the holding body 18. The joint part 12 includes a first bar-like member 24 one end of which is connected to the first joint part 11, a second bar-like member 25 one end of which is connected to the second joint part 13, and a friction member interposed between the first bar-like member 24 and the second bar-like member 25.
