Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bill storage device and an automatic transaction apparatus of which the crime prevention performance is not degraded. SOLUTION: The bill storage device includes: a first storage part 512 for storing a first colorant for coloring the upper end of a bill 505; an upper coloring member 513 having an opening for applying the first colorant to the bill; an accumulating part including a bottom plate 506 holding the bill and having a hole part, a push plate 508 for pushing the bill in a lateral direction and a guide part 509 for pushing out the bill in a push plate direction; a second storage part 503 for storing a second colorant for coloring the lower end of the bill; a drive part 303 for pushing the second storage part; a sensor for detecting abnormality of the bill storage device; and a control part which when the sensor detects abnormality, causes the upper coloring member to be in contact with the upper end of the bill to thereby cause the first colorant to flow out from the opening of the upper coloring member by causing the push plate to move in a direction reverse to the pushing direction, and which causes the drive part to push the second storage part to thereby cause the second colorant to flow out from the hole part.
