Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process to prepare a hydrocracking catalyst which is small in macropore amount and has an improved catalytic function in a hydrocracking process. SOLUTION: The catalyst comprises at least one dehydrogenating element selected from the group consisting of elements of group VIB and group VIII in the periodic table, a non-zeolitic silica-alumina-based substrate containing an amount of more than 10 wt.% and less than or equal to 80 wt.% of silica, and has the following characteristics: a mean pore diameter of 20 to 140 , measured by mercury porosimetry, a total pore volume of 0.1 to 0.6 ml/g, measured by mercury porosimetry, a total pore volume of 0.1 to 0.6 ml/g, measured by nitrogen porosimetry, a BET specific surface area in the range of 150 to 500 m2/g, a pore volume of less than 0.1 ml/g contained in the pores with diameters of larger than 140 , measured by mercury porosimetry, and a pore volume of less than 0.1 ml/g contained in the pores with diameters of larger than 160 , measured by mercury porosimetry.
