Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly supply organic matter and oxygen as dissolved oxygen to microorganisms in a method and apparatus where organic matter-containing water to be treated and gas are supplied into a flow passage where a carrier having the microorganisms immobilized thereon is present so that the organic matter in the water to be treated is oxidized by the microorganisms. SOLUTION: The apparatus includes: the flow passage which is installed in the longitudinal direction and has an upper portion serving as a discharge side; a compartment formed by partition plates and the side wall of the flow passage, wherein the partition plates have a large number of small holes formed therethrough and are arranged vertically at a predetermined distance in the flow passage; a supply passage for the water to be treated, which is allowed to communicate with the compartment; and a gas supply device for supplying air or oxygen at a superficial velocity of 50-500 m/hr with a supply port arranged to face the bottom of the compartment. The water to be treated, which has been supplied to the compartment where the carrier having the microorganisms immobilized thereon is present, is caused to form a turbulent flow, and thus the organic matter is oxidized.
