Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hierarchical storage system that exhibits advantages of both writing in units of files and writing in units of volumes in storing contents in a tape. SOLUTION: The hierarchical storage system includes a disk device 4 which has a file system which is accessed by a host, and the tape 6 which stores data, and performs random access at higher speed than that of the tape; an intermediate volume 5 interposed between the disk device and the tape, and performs random access at higher speed than that of the tape; and a control unit 3 which controls commands for data access from the host. The control unit sequentially writes the file system of the disk device into the intermediate volume in the units of files, and writes data from the intermediate volume to the tape for each volume.
