Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reliably detect dry-out of a fuel cell without making the system large in size and high in cost. SOLUTION: The fuel cell system includes a fuel cell stack 25 having a plurality of fuel battery cells 10 laminated in which a fuel electrode 2 and an oxidant electrode 3 are arranged facing each other interposing an electrolyte membrane 1. When the diffusion coefficient of water moving in the electrolyte membrane is made Dw (m2/sec), the thickness of the electrolyte membrane 1 is made L(m), and the electro-osmosis coefficient is made Nd (molH2O/MOLH+), some of the fuel battery cells out of the plurality of fuel battery cells 10 constituting the fuel cell stack 25 has a smaller value as expressed by Dw/(L×Nd) than other fuel battery cells 10, and a voltage detection means to detect the cell voltage is installed in some of the fuel battery cells.
