Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an expanded image having a sense of resolution, without causing excessive overshooting. SOLUTION: An input image Din is expanded to output a first expanded image D2A; a high-frequency component of the input image Din is expanded to output a second expanded image D2B; a high-frequency component of the second expanded image D2B is extracted to output a first intermediate image D32A; and a second intermediate image D32B obtained by executing nonlinear processing to the second expanded image D2B is output. At least one of the first intermediate image D32A, the second intermediate image D32B and an image D3 obtained by adding them is amplified, at a gain according to the pixel value of the first expanded image D2A (33A, 33B).
