Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shock absorber configured to adjust damping force according to the stroke frequency of a piston rod, improving responsiveness and obtaining stable damping force characteristic. SOLUTION: A piston 5 to which the piston rod 6 is connected is inserted in a cylinder. The passage area of a by-pass passage 20 communicating between upper and lower chambers 2A, 2B of the cylinder is adjusted by a damping force adjusting mechanism 19. A shutter 22 is elastically held by plate springs 23, 24, openings of elongation and contraction variable passages 32A, 33A are adjusted by movement of the shutter 22, and the shutter 22 is moved by fluid force caused by contraction of area. Resistance is applied to the movement of the shutter 22 by the characteristic of a vibration system including the shutter 22 and the plate springs 23, 24 to adjust the damping force according to the stroke frequency of the piston rod 6. Since the differential pressure between the upper and lower chambers 2A, 2B of the cylinder is not the thrust of the shutter 22, invalid stroke is held down to the minimum to quickly start expected damping force.
