Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rectangular shield machine and a cutter recovery method for recovering a cutter onto a pit mouth side without dismantling the cutter. SOLUTION: This rectangular shield machine 1 includes an outer cylinder 6 having a rectangular cross section, an inner cylinder 7 being detachably stored in the outer cylinder 6 and having a circular cross section, an inner side bulkhead 8 provided at one end of the inner cylinder 7 and blocking the inner cylinder 7, a cutter device 9 mounted on the inner side bulkhead 8, and an outer side bulkhead 10 provided at one end of the outer cylinder 6 and blocking a section between the outer cylinder 6 and the inner cylinder 7. The cutter device 9 includes a cutter body 17 having extensible/contractible cutter spokes 18, 19 and a cutter driving part 28 provided divisibly in the cutter body 17 and on the inner side bulkhead 8. A manhole with lid 39 enabling the cutter spokes 18, 19 to pass into a rear part by cutting a part of the outer side bulkhead 10 facing a corner part 16 of the outer cylinder 6 is formed in the outer side bulkhead 10.
