Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of treating sewage sludge to reduce the pathogen content of the sewage sludge.SOLUTION: The treatment method to reduce the pathogen content of the sewage sludge containing pathogens including Escherichia coli includes the steps of: (a) adding to the sewage sludge an effective amount of a phosphorus-containing compound (wherein the phosphorus-containing compound is tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium bromide, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium phosphate, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium acetate or tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium oxalate); and (b) keeping the phosphorus-containing compound in contact with the sludge for a sufficient time to reduce the amount of the pathogens present in the sludge by an amount equivalent to a logarithmic reduction value of ≥2, and achieve the level of Escherichia coli in the treated sewage sludge of ≤10cfu/gds per gram of dry sludge.
