Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress engagement noise by making a pinion engaged with a ring gear at optimum timing. SOLUTION: An ECU 30 has an idle stop control function, and performs cranking in a state that the pinon 16 of a starter 10 is engaged with the ring gear 22 connected to a crankshaft 21 during the restarting of an engine, and releases the engagement after the completion of cranking. An engine rotation speed is calculated based on a detection signal of a rotation sensor (crank angle sensor 23) for detecting the rotation of the crankshaft 21. Especially, the ECU 30 estimates a rotation track of engine inertia rotation based on the engine rotation speed calculated based on the detection signal of the rotation sensor in a period when the engine 20 is rotated at its own inertia after the automatic stop of the engine, and controls the timing for making the pinion 16 engaged with the ring gear 22 based on the estimated rotation track.
