PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering system which prevents a bracket holding an upper column on part of a vehicle body from being separated even by the action of a load that exceeds a load required for separating the bracket from part of the vehicle body when the position of a steering wheel is adjustable. SOLUTION: A column relative movement prohibition-permission mechanism 90, which selectively realizes the prohibition and permission of the relative movement of the upper column 22 and a lower column 24, permits the relative movement of the upper column and the lower column. In a state that the position of the steering wheel 72 is adjustable, even when a load that exceeds a load required for separating the bracket from the vehicle body acts on a bracket separation permission mechanism 100, which permits a bracket 18 holding the upper column to separate from part of the vehicle body, the bracket cannot be made to separate from the vehicle body by providing a bracket separation prevention mechanism 130 that prevents the separation.
