Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: a polarizing element of a deep color with a transmittance of 20% or less without in-plane distribution of polarization degrees; and a method of manufacturing the polarizing element to efficiently manufacture the polarizing element with simple steps. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the polarizing element includes: a process I to form an alignment film 4 by applying alignment coat liquid containing at least alkoxy silane and/or hexalkoxy disiloxane on a substrate 1 dyed to have a luminous transmittance above 75%; a process II to form an alignment layer 5 having monoaxial polishing traces by polishing the alignment film in a monoaxial direction; a process III to form a polarizing layer 6 by aligning and depositing dichromatic dye on the alignment layer; and a process IV to form a protection layer 7 for fixing dye on the polarizing layer.
