PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital signal recording and reproducing method and a device, which prohibit illegal use of a signal recorded in a recording medium and a signal output to a digital interface, even when the signals are copiable digital broadcast signals. SOLUTION: First, second, third, and fourth information protect copyright. The first information and the second information are added to a digital signal. The third information is input from a digital interface together with the digital signal. The value of the fourth information is decided based on a combination of the first to third information and recorded in the recording medium. The first information controls a copy limit of the digital signal, the second information controls whether to protect the signal from illegal use, the third information shows whether the signal is encrypted or not, and the fourth information controls a copy limit of the digital signal recorded in the recording medium.
