Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite material for a spacecraft using titanium or a titanium alloy which can burn out material forming the spacecraft during the atmosphere entry of the spacecraft. SOLUTION: The composite material has a base material consisting of titanium or a titanium alloy, and has a covering layer of metal or intermetallic compound on a surface of the base material. The covering layer is formed of a metal or a metal compound to induce the eutectic reaction with the base material, and the thickness of the covering layer is determined so that the base material with its melting point being dropped by the eutectic reaction is melted by the friction heat during the atmosphere entry from the outer space. Further, the eutectic temperature of the metal or the metal compound is ≤1,300°C. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
