PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gravity type filtration apparatus which enables high-speed filtration even when using a filter medium such as sand, and a method of cleaning water. SOLUTION: In a natural balanced gravity type filtration tank 3 having a raw water inlet 2 on the upper part of the filtration tank and having a backflow cleaning mechanism forming a packed bed 5 by a granular filler, a treated water outlet 7 is provided on the bottom part of the filtration tank, and the treated water outlet is arranged with an upper effluent pipe 8 whose upper end is opened from the treated water outlet to the upper part of the filtration tank to discharge treated water from a position above the packed bed 5 and a lower effluent pipe 12 through which the treated water is discharged as it is from the treated water outlet and which has a water level control valve 13, and the filtration tank is provided with a control means for operating the water level control valve by signals from a water gauge 26 equipped at the upper part and executing control so that a water level inside the filtration tank does not exceed a predetermined point.
