Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device achieving a wide viewing angle and/or high luminance. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is provided having: first and second polarizers (3401, 3404); a liquid crystal layer (3403) which is placed between the first and second polarizers and of which liquid crystal molecules can be vertically aligned; and a phase difference film (3402) which includes a phase difference in the planes placed between the first and second polarizers and of which optical axis is vertically put to absorption axes of the adjacent polarizers, where the refractive index includes a relation of nx>nz>=ny. Where, nx is the refractive index in the optical axial direction; ny is the refractive index orthogonal to nx; and nz is the reflective index in the vertical direction to the plane.
