Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize engine restarting, by restraining the engine restarting against will of a driver. SOLUTION: A clutch device 12 is arranged between an engine 10 and a transmission 13 for cutting off and transmitting motive power in response to operation by the driver. An ECU 30 automatically stops the engine 10 when a predetermined stopping condition is established when operating the engine, and restarts the engine 10 when a predetermined restarting condition is established after stopping its engine. The ECU 30 determines that the step-releasing operation of a clutch pedal 17 is started as a restarting condition. The ECU 30 detects a clutch operation state in the step-releasing operation of the clutch pedal 17, and permits or prohibits the restart of the engine 10 based on the detected clutch operation state.
