Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrochromic display element which allows uniform oxidation-reduction reaction with a simple configuration without using a light scattering material together and without processing an electrode surface. SOLUTION: The electrochromic display element includes a pair of electrodes and a medium layer interposed between the pair of electrodes, and at least one of the pair of electrodes is a transparent electrode, and the medium layer contains a specific viologen compound, a specific support electrolyte, and a solvent. When a voltage is applied between the electrodes, (1) a region which is colored by deposition of a coloring matter on the transparent electrode and a region which is decolored by dissolution of the coloring matter are in a range of ≥-1.0 and <1.0 V with respect to a saturated calomel electrode, and (2) a region wherein a white layer is formed by deposition of crystal on the transparent electrode is in a range of ≥1.0 V with respect to the saturated calomel electrode.
