Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bulky nonwoven fabric usable even in uses requiring shape retention and strength, and to provide a method for producing the nonwoven fabric. SOLUTION: The nonwoven fabric is an inorganic fiber nonwoven fabric bonded with an inorganic adhesive and having a porosity of ≥90% and a cutting load of ≥9.8 mN per unit fabric weight. The production method contains: (1) a step to spin an inorganic gel fiber by electrostatic spinning from a spinning inorganic sol solution containing a compound composed mainly of an inorganic component; (2) a step to irradiate an ion having a polarity opposite to that of the inorganic gel fiber for accumulation and to form a gel fiber web; (3) a step to fire the gel fiber web to form an inorganic fiber web; (4) a step to apply an inorganic sol solution for bonding containing a compound composed mainly of an inorganic component to the whole inorganic fiber web including the inner part, and to remove excessive sol solution by aeration to form an inorganic fiber web containing the sol solution; and (5) a step to perform heat-treatment on the inorganic fiber web containing the sol solution to form the inorganic fiber nonwoven fabric bonded with the inorganic adhesive in the whole fabric including the inner part.
