Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of making seawater harmless and an apparatus therefor which achieve reduction in equipment and operation costs and surely perform extinction or sterilization of microorganisms of unlimited size without reducing strength on a side of treated seawater accommodation body of a ship or the like. SOLUTION: In the method of making seawater harmless, conversion of untreated ballast water (hereinafter referred to as seawater) to clean treated seawater through microorganism removal by combination of at least a microorganism separation treatment section and an electrolytic tank is carried out and normal treated seawater obtained by the conversion is accommodated in a ballast water tank. The method is characterized in that microorganism separation treatment and chlorination are applied to the seawater and treated seawater is accommodated in the ballast water tank and in that, in the microorganism separation treatment, microorganisms of comparatively large size in the seawater is removed by centrifugal separation or filtration performed by running the untreated seawater through a filter or the like, and in the chlorination, all or a part of the seawater subjected to microorganism separation treatment is introduced in the electrolytic bath, a chlorine-containing substance is produced by electrolysis in the electrolytic bath, the chlorine-containing substance is poured into the seawater to perform extinction or sterilization of all microorganisms.
