Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve braking performance, improve fuel economy and reduce vehicle shocks concurrently when automatically stopping an internal combustion engine from a vehicle decelerating state. SOLUTION: A controller 21 stops fuel injection when a running vehicle comes into a predetermined decelerating state in which the vehicle is likely to be stopped to generate an automatic stop request. Meanwhile, input and output shafts of a transmission mechanism 18 of an automatic transmission 13 are coupled directly by a direct coupling means 19 to make a vehicle driveshaft 15 and an engine 11 capable of power transmission via a power transmission means 17 enabling a slip between input and output shafts. If a restart request is generated before the vehicle is stopped completely, the engine 11 is restarted with the input and output shafts of the transmission mechanism 18 coupled directly by the direct coupling means 19. If no restart request is generated before the vehicle is stopped completely, the direct coupling means 19 is released when the vehicle is stopped completely to release the direct coupling of the input and output shafts of the transmission mechanism 18.
