PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for improved fan control in a power supply to which a substantially instantaneous adjustment of a fan speed is beneficial. SOLUTION: The apparatus measures an input power to the power supply and measures an output power provided by the power supply over an interval. The apparatus determines values for the input power and output power and, using these two values, determines how much power has been dissipated in the power supply. Power dissipation values are associated with particular fan speeds, and the apparatus adjusts the speed of the fan in the power supply based on how much power has been dissipated during the interval. Increasing the level of power dissipation increases the fan speed, and decreasing the level of power dissipation decreases the fan speed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
