Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly measure an outer diameter over the full circumference even when an angle of advance of a pipe shifts from the direction of conveyance. SOLUTION: A computer obtains values of shifts in the horizontal and vertical directions on the entrance side from measured values of sensors 41 and 42 installed at the entrance for the pipe, and values of shifts in the horizontal and vertical directions on the exit side from measured values of sensors 61 and 62 installed at the exit side. Moreover, it receives a measured value of the outer diameter from an outer diameter gage 52 moving in the circumferential direction around the pipe, and an input of a pulse showing a change in an angle of rotation of the outer diameter gage from a rotary encoder 53. The computer converts entrance-side coordinates consisting of the values of shifts in the horizontal and vertical directions on the entrance side and exit-side coordinates consisting of the values of shifts in the horizontal and vertical directions on the exit side, into coordinates on the coordinate axis rotated by the angle of rotation of the outer diameter gage, and corrects the measured outer diameter to calculate an actual outer diameter, using a cosine of the angle of advance of the pipe which is obtained from the converted coordinates and the distances between the sensors on the entrance and exit sides.
