PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problem of having risk of being unable to sufficiently secure a desired collapse area, due to having the possibility of sandwiching a falling-off hinderance factor (such as a meter) by a steering member and a column operation component in contraction, in adopting a structure of making a factor (a hindrance factor) of hindering security of a collapse area such as the meter, fall off from a steering column. SOLUTION: The column peripheral component separation structure includes the steering column 10 contractibly formed in the column axial direction, a meter unit 15 separably installed on the steering column 10, and a direction regulating part 22 for regulating the post-separation movement direction of the meter unit 15 separating from the steering column 10 in the upward direction of the steering column 10 when contracting the steering column 10.
